Sneaky Apple... real sneaky. Just as the company announced that it
would be axing its rack-mountable Xserve come January 31st, in flies
an all-new Mac Pro to effectively take its place. The Mac Pro Server
-- which is slated to ship in "two to four weeks" -- has joined the
fray this morning on Apple's websit
Not so sneaky... the transition document attached to the XServe dropping
news contains two suggested approaches: use a Mini or a Mac Pro. Here it is.
PS The Mac Mini suggestion sounds crazy to me. I mean, the bits work, I
use two Minis at home, and it could be ok for home or a home-business,
but I'd be really worried to pack them into a squeezed box running with
tons of other similar stuff in a mission critical environment. For
instance, I took care of keeping the two power supplies well separated,
with one cm of air in-between, because I'd be seriously worried about
overheating on the long time. I suspect that the providers that Chris
referred to, offering hosting base on Mac Mini, did some hardware
tweaking, such as applying extra cooling facilities etc.
