I think your reading of the policy (3.1 - "Apps with metadata that
mentions the name of any other mobile platform will be rejected") is
correct. It stinks, it's obnoxious, it's cravenly self-serving, and
it makes me think they're a little scared. But you'd be a damn fool
to risk breaking it, particularly given the rejection of the Android
magazine app.

And yet… here's a book app <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/effective-
java-app-iphone/id348149681?mt=8> with the title "Effective Java"

And another, "Java The Good Parts" <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/
java-the-good-parts/id371676805?mt=8>

And some JavaDoc readers:
    <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/java-doc/id397879624?mt=8>
    <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/java-doc/id397879624?mt=8>

And some static-text Java educational apps:
    <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/java-ee-q-a/id367786692?mt=8>
    <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/java-technologies/id373547115?
mt=8>

And, similar to what a Java Posse app would provide, something called
"Java Developer News": <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/java-developer-
news/id321774418?mt=8>

There are 83,000 Google hits for the search term "site:apple.com
itunes "app store" java". Some are about the island, and there are
many duplicates. The hit count plunges 1,100 if you replace "java"
with "j2me", although that could be explained in part by the
unpopularity of ME compared to the SE and EE. Still this does turn up
hits that do mention other platforms in their metadata. Consider
Storyz <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/storyz/id294773113?mt=8>:
"Show, Tell or just check out each thread of growing, growing, growing
Storyz on iPhone, wap, phone apps such as J2ME and Android (soon),
Facebook, web widgets and email (soon)." [of course, Storyz was last
updated in March, 2009, prior to the public guidelines and the
prohibition on mentioning other platforms.]

>From this, I guess I wouldn't assume a Java Posse app would be an
automatic rejection. I'd be concerned, sure -- Apple's App Store
policies and their enforcement has been capricious at best. But an
app that provided real value -- collecting episodes, providing an
interface to the show notes and moderator group, providing a swipe
gesture to make the whip crack sound or an auto-chipmunk feature to
grind through the Quick News -- probably couldn't be rejected just on
functionality grounds.
