How many iPhone users know the OS version? Even if they don't know the major
& minor numbers, they see the updates come in, maybe read about the new
features and feel happy about it (I suppose).

Sure, but retaining existing customers is cheaper than acquiring new ones,
especially if they don't upgrade their phones, but only their OS. Maybe the
carriers agree with Cédric ♔ that this is not a selling point.
