In 2006, it's fair to say that a lot of people hated EJB :-)

Now, I find it hard to, simply because today's EJB has gathered all the best
features from all the alternative solutions that were created as a response
to the poor quality of EJB 2.

Whether you actually use JPA or a non Java EE ORM, I'm pretty sure that you
are using the same ideas with just different flavors. You won't be able to
say that Hibernate is vastly superior to JPA without getting funny looks.
