Microsoft did not pay Sun for C#. Microsoft paid Sun as a penalty for abusing their trademark and breaching a contract.

It was android as we have it now, or something completely different. I know which one I'd rather have. You don't need to pay people who make mistakes if you so happen to have watched them make these mistakes and you take this into account.
