Thanks for the detailed explanation. So, yes, as I thought git renaming is the same thing as hg "squash commit", as the "mq extension" (which is NOT a plugin today, in the sense that it's already embedded in the hg code, just need to activate it in the configuration) allows to manipulate in several ways the "queue" of local commits, including merging several commits into a single one before pushing. I agree that it's a very important feature. So, hg is not less than git even in this respect.
