No, but a surge of hiring could signal a new product or service, and just knowing accurate staffing levels would give you a good idea of how quickly the competition could bring a product to market. If I were in Apple's or Google's shoes, I wouldn't give away that information unless I had to. There's nothing to gain and a lot of advantage to lose.
