As far as using proportional fonts for programming, the only time I've ever done that was a very long time ago when I was working in Smalltalk. All the ST environments I used defaulted to a proportional font, so I pretty much stuck with that. It always bugged me a little, because I wanted things to line up like they do with monospace fonts.
