First, apologies for ducking out of this conversation a while back.
Looks like there was a lot of ground covered, but I must confess to
have archived this thread without reading all of it at least twice
now.

This is the same fear mongering done earlier.  Is there any evidence
of patents EVER being used to protect against this form of concern?  I
mean, I could contrive a "without patents, it is possible children
could starve" argument all day.  Reality just doesn't seem to support
this.
