You can get the Firefox browser here. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html It's not required but it's good to use more than one browser. You can get openoffice here http://www.openoffice.org/ Linux OS is not required.
The information on the google groups home page is an excellent source for your questions if you don't find what you need on javapassion.com. I've been excited about finding out information and moving along and asked questions that are already answered on the groups page. Just take a deep breath. Settle in and log everything you do.
