Yes--I had done everything Michael had, and was getting the same error.
LD_LIBRARY_PATH was set correctly.  Finally I realized that I was using
64-bit Java with the javax-usb extension (which I assume is specific to
32-bit implementations).  Going to a 32-bit version made the error go
away.

You mean you put everything inside the JRE and it doesn't work?  I have
not tried it myself, but I don't know what limitations there are with
including the shared lib inside the JRE.  Have you tried setting the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to see if it works that way?
