I believe you have in mind the 'rapid reading' checkbox, outlined below.  Can 
you give an example of what you want to do, and tell us your model of braille 
display?  Do you have a Freedom Scientific braille display such as one of the 
pac Mate or Focus types?  For them, there is a 'rapid reading' checkbox, which 
has the effect of shortening the display length to 20 cells.  It can be checked 
to enable this, in the Configuration manager, Set Options, Braille Options, 
Advanced Options... dialogue.  My own braille display, a brailleNote with 32 
cells, not a Freedom Scientific product, unfortunately does not get the benefit 
of this.  Users of braille displays manufactured by Freedom Scientific (if 
there are some here) may want to make further observations.
