Hi Devona, Depending on your hardware configuration, and sometimes, hardware has nothing to do with it, Adobe will take some time to load the PDF file for you to view and read.
What happens when you enter on a PDF file to open, is that Adobe will open up and read the file itself first. At that point, it takes the settings that you set it to when it first detected your use of assistive technology, and it will display and present the document to your screen reader in the way you asked Adobe to present it. Now, having said that, there is a small dialog box, when you initially open up a PDF file, that says processing page so of so. It is essentially doing what I explained above. This may take a few seconds, minutes, or, in the case of a text book I have, it literally takes a few hours. Anyway, during that time, Jaws will not be able to interact with Adobe, and you'll notice that when you're on the Adobe window, it'll just freeze up, but I think you'll notice that when you alt+tab over to another window, you'll find Jaws comes back. This is normal until Adobe completes the processing of the document. Like I said, you may have to wait a bit before Jaws will come back. Go ahead and get your friend to try my suggestions, also ask her to have some patience, because after she alt tabs away from the Adobe window, it may take a few seconds before Jaws realizes that it's no longer on the Adobe window and comes back. If Jaws still doesn't come back after alt tabbing away from Adobe, then you've got other issues and will have to get some more information in order for the list to help you out. Oh, and if you use the Jaws cursor during the processing portion of opening the document, route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor and you'll find the little dialog box I was referring to.
