If you have a fax/modem on your computer, then the most accessible way to 
send a fax is with the fax software built-in to Windows.  It installs as a 
printer.  When you want to fax, you just choose the fax printer and print. 
You will be prompted for the phone number, etc.  I haven't used it with XP 
(since I bought a real fax machine), but it worked great with Windows 2000.

There are also services that allow you to send a fax via email.  One such 
service is efax.  I believe that it costs about $10 per month plus a per 
page charge.
