JAWS is seeing ANSI character 173, some sort of hyphen (it's late here, so I may look it up later on.) Perhaps an 'optional hyphen', not the standard hyphen or dashes. I can feel a hyphen on my braille display, so that (for example) we may get 'pop-u-lar' for 'popular'.
