Hi Paul, I am currently using this combination that you speak of. What I have found is to disable the top and bottom edge alert in the verbosity settings dialogue box while in word. To do this, do an insert plus v and press t until you get to top and bottom edge alert and if jaws says on press the space bar to have it set to off and press enter. Now, it should work for you.
