I agree Marilyn. If it was off, the next time you booted up, you'd get the baloon sound and then a message about items shown in red needing your immediate attention. That's how AVG Professional works anyway. I'm not sure about AVG Free but it too has a scanner which handles both inbound and outbound when operational.
