And why do you think they 'cover up text'? Is it to cause 'us' problems? And 'interfere with speech' is in the ear of the beholder. JAWS verbosity options are provided to make adjustments there, among other things and places. Smart tags do have a useful purpose - even though I don't use them thus - across other Microsoft products, myself.
