I have fond memories of my dell latitude.  I also like gateway, HP, and Sony 
Vaio for their performance.  Personal opinion is that gateways are among 
your best possible solution.  I don't care for Toshiba's laptops, as they 
don't have a home and end key, but the home and end function can only be 
simulated with the fn key, which bugs meno end.  Also, I'm writing this on 
an Acer that performs quite acceptably, but in my opinion it isn't worth 
having an Acer unless you max out the ram.  In summary, Gateway or HP first, 
Sony second, Dell third because of the casing on the laptop which tends to 
be a little too fragile in my experience, and Acer last, although I 
definitely don't think they should be written off because they're a pretty 
good buy.  This is to say nothing of brands that I don't know or don't have 
any experience using.  Hope this helps at least a little.
