Afternoon all. I've a question about table summaries on web pages. I'm
looking for information about how you use table summary information, what
information your ideal table summary would contain, and whether typical
table summaries on the web provide you any useful information. Would you
like a table summary to provide you enough information to allow you to
completely avoid browsing the table? Do you need or use table summaries at
all? Are either of the following two sample table summaries better than the
other, and if so why?

Table Summary I

The following table summarizes our product offerings and the attributes of
each of those products.

Table Summary II

Following is a table summarizing our product offerings and the attributes of
those products. Across the top of the table are five columns, representing
each of our products: product a, product b, product c, product d, and
product e. Down the left side of the table are eight features: feature 1,
feature 2, feature 3, feature 4, feature 5, feature 6, feature 7, and
feature 8. For product a, features 1, 4, 5, and 7 are available, while
features 2, 3, 6, and 8 are not. For product b, features 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7
are available, while features 3, 6, and 8 are not. For product c, features
1, 2, and 7 are available, while features 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 are not. Product
d has all the same features available as product b, along with feature 6.
Product e shows all eight features to be available.

Note that in an actual table summary formatted like table summary II,
product letters and feature numbers would be replaced with their actual
column and row headers.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you can provide, and feel free to write
privately if you'd like to respond without cluttering the list.

Very gratefully,
Jeremiah Z. Rogers
