What about pressing F12 to save as? I'm not sure which version of Word you are using. But in most cases, there is a "Save As" option under the File menu. When you press that option, it gives you a list of choices, one of which is a .txt format. You will probably be warned about losing some of the configuration details, but the text will be saved.
