In word 10, I save as and tab down to save as type and select .txt plain text.
Then a conversion box comes up and I just tab to OK button and all the text is
saved and no word formatting.

I agree. I also see that we were approaching the problem from different
directions.

Oh no, you can copy the text from your word document to notepad, no problem,
and won't get any formatting or other code. I mean if you open a word document
in notepad, that's what you will get. The op was asking if there was any better
way to convert a .docx (or .doc I suppose) file to .txt, without doing the copy
operation. I'm sure there are file converters out there, but the best way would
seem to be using Word itself to do this, or wordpad.

Ah, I can't speak for Windows 10. With Windows 7, I've never experienced chaos
with files copied to Notepad.

Sorry, you mean notepad never worked to do this, or you never got a lot of
unconverted characters? I actually tried it just now to be sure notepad in
windows 10 didn't handle .doocx files any better. It will open anything you
throw at it, of course, but you'll still get a bunch of gibberish.

Regarding your Notepad comment, never in my experience.

Yep, that's it. Word will save in a ton of formats, including .txt. You can
also open the file in wordpad. However, notepad will not do, as you'll just get
a whole lot of unconverted code characters.

Not sure if there is an easier way -- maybe opening the doc in Word and using
the Save-As command and saving it as a text document.
