I was talking with a friend of mine who said that this is something that has been happening with Windows 10 for some time. Whenever I or anyone would save a file on an external harddrive, it would be saved in read only mode for protection of the document. All of my other documents on the drive are accessible for methat were created in previous versions of Windows, so ... Thanks to all who have chimed in on this.

Ah.
It's starting to sound as though you might have a corrupted disk partition.

When did this start happening?
As an experiment, to see if something else is causing it, can you go back to
a system restore point from before the error started happening?

If you can still read data from the drive, it means you can still can copy
it. So I'd back up everything important from that drive.

You might need more help than people on this list can provide. The good news
would seem to be that the data is still actually there and accessible by the
drive, so it's not a total hard disk failure that'd cost you hundreds of
dollars to salvage.

you need to type
cmd
in the run box and hit inter
the coming command line box interface has a problim with jaws2018 if you on
windows10, its going to say "text area" nothing else but it still works , if
you have NVDA it works fine with it. if not still do as above with my
instructions, press insert plus B, to hear the feed back, its going to be
really chatty.
If you find it hard to do, try to find someone to help you that know how to
do it via tandem. just give him the command I've posted.

Ok, do as below:
copy the next line to notepad:

chkdsk /f X:
replace the "X" in the line, with the external drive letter, do not
delete the colon mark at end of line, make sure no spaces after the
colon mark.
select and copy the line again
open the CMD command again from the run box, with the CMD terminal
interface press alt+spacebar, and arrow up to "edit submenu"
open it and find the "paste" and hit inter, hit inter again.
it should work this time, as long as you've put in the right drive letter.

Errors more info:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd637756.aspx
make sure your drive to be fixed is not in use.
BTW its not rude to ask any tech related question.

command, replace the letter "X" with your actual external drive
letter:

chkdsk /f X:

hit the inter key, and wait untell the process ends and close the
window

hope it works for you.

The wholeproblem comes in as two problems. When I save a document,

But when I copy and paste a already created document onto it, it

a read only file. It really is crazy; but if it weren't, then it
would not be my pc. Thanks.

Ah. If your username is on it, then you are the owner. So ... I am
also at a loss. Can you post the exact message you are getting when
you try to save?
Have you tried copying a document from your C drive to the external?
What
message do you get then? Is this only an MS office thing?

JM:
I followed your instructions, and my name is on the owner section.
When you say user name, what exactly do you mean; as I have never
set up any of this stuff previously. So, I am at a loss for
clarity. Thanks.

HI.
Is this a prompt? As in, do you have the option to continue?

If not, you should try changing the "owner" of the drive.

Go to "this pc" and find your external hit.
Hit alt-enter to bring up the properties of the drive.
Select the "security" tab, by hitting right arrow from "general"
until you hear "security".
Click the "advanced" button.
Check the owner of the drive.
To change it, hit the "change" link Enter your username in the
appropriate box.

You should be allowed full access. There are a lot of settings you
can adjust here, but I don't think you should need to mess with any
of them.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Administrative rights on External Hard Drive

Morning all.

I have an external hard drive that I have been trying to save a
document onto. However, when I go through the save as features and
identify my external, I get a message stating that I do not have
administrative rights to this. Can anyone tell me how to correct
this problem? I am using Word 13, Windows 10 and JAWS 2018 on a
Dell laptop. Thanks in advance.
