Oh, it's not a conspiracy theory, it's the truth. If you ever root your mobile phone, you might be dismayed to see the number of things that run in the background, which are potential backdoors to discover all kinds of things about you, your habits, your messages, contacts. These aren't spyware or anything; the phone companies who sell you the phones put them in there.

I would personally just use another media player, like Winamp, Foobar or VlC. I don't see the point in messing around with your user account or restore points just to be able to play a bloody mp3. Still, you don't seem to be alone with this problem, so do some more investigating online if you feel it's worth the effort. I know that's not much help.
