Thank you, Joseph. Pressing enter works! Smile. I put one in a document
and then later wasn't sure what I'd done before. It said the emoji was
selected, so I pressed control c to copy it, then control v to paste. Works
everywhere else in Microsoft! LOL. Not here. JAWS reads the smiling face
with smiling eyes emoji, but not several others that I added, the eagle or
butterfly. I know they were there since Narrator read them.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji

Hi,
I'll try my best to address several questions about emoji panel in one go:

Q. What is emoji?
Emoji (a shorthand Japanese for "emotion characters", from Romanization of
"emo" and "ji" (character)) is a picture that represents objects, emotions,
people, events and so on. This came about in the late 1990's where people
wanted to conserve space on data usage yet wanted to express their emotions
to the fullest. This became pop0ular among Japanese mobile phone users via
SMS (short messaging service) before it gain widespread usage in 2010's.

Q. How do I read emoji?
It'll depend on screen reader and synthesizer in use. Some synthesizers do
support announcing emojis, while others don't. Also, the ability to
recognize emojis will depend on how the screen reader processes Unicode data
and instructions sent to speech synthesizers regarding how to process such
characters.

Q. How do I input emoji?
In Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) and later, you can browse
and insert emoji by pressing Windows+period or Windows+semicolon. Note that
in 1709 and 1803 (April 2018 Update), only United States English keyboard
layout will let you browse emojis. In Redstone 5 (under development), this
restriction is gone.
In 1709 and 1803, once emoji panel opens, press the arrow keys to move
through emojis. Press Tab to cycle through emoji categories, or if you're
looking for a specific emoji, type the name and the panel will return
suggestions. To insert a given emoji, press Enter.
In Redstone 5, you can still use arrow keys to move through emojis. However,
pressing Tab will not cycle through categories; rather, it'll switch between
emojis and categories. To select a different emoji category, press Tab to go
the categories, then use left or right arrows to move through categories and
press Enter. In case of People category, you can choose a skin tone. Once
the emoji is found, press Enter.

Q. Does JAWS support emoji panel?
Not at this time (according to tests). Some users asked VFO regarding this
matter not long ago.

Q. Does other screen readers support emoji panel?
Write to me privately regarding this matter please (not only to keep the
topic on scope, but also because I am the one who brought support for emoji
panel for a certain screen reader; hint: there will come a day when a
certain scripts will not be required to interact with emoji panel, but
that's for another time).

Cheers,
Joseph
