Roger, This is a safeguard as Windows XP SP3 is similar to upgrading your operating system where everything from the ground up is upgraded and you wouldn't want your battery die part way through this process. If it did, you could end up with a non-functioning computer, requiring you to possibeley reformat the entire ahrd drive.
