As mentioned on these reviews, what about all the registry traces and 
non-active or non-executable files left behind by both products after clean 
up?
 How best to clean up the clean up?

PC Magazine recently reviewed both programs.

I personally do not use either, since I just bought a Dell laptop, which
came with 3 years of Trend Micro PC - Cillin.  I will have to upgrade the
AVG 7.5 on my kids computer to one of those soon though.

In my oppinion you can't expect any free version to be as good as the paid
version.  Avast isn't rated that well even though the free version might
have
more features than free AVG.  That's just something to consider.  I'm not
trying
to start an arguement about which is better though.
