A few weeks ago, one of my clients had similar problems with Microsoft Word 2003. When he restarted his computer and opened Word, he would be taken into a document numbered doc 3, doc 4, etc. Word would also indicate that the document was a recovered one. The document being considered as a recovered one had a changed top margin, which indicated that the Normal.DOT file had been changed or corrupted. The way we finally resolved the problem was to rename the Normal.DOT template to Normal.OLD, restarting the computer and opening Word again. This forced Word to create a new Normal.DOT file. He no longer got the recovered document message and documents started being numbered as doc 1, doc 2, etc. This might or might not work for the people on this list having similar problems with Word but it might be worth a try.
Take care.
