Unfortunately it happens to me also when I set up a gmail acount on a second computer, or if my system crashes and I need to set up acounts again, or when I delete the gmail acount and import it again with the setting to receive my messages. It also does this to me if I change the setting that allows me to receive my own messages. It doesn't matter if I turned it on or off, each change makes it receive around 5000 e-mailes. I noticed, it downloads the messages from the last month. And jus wait to see what happens when you set up an imap gmail acount. Pray that you don't have to reset it, or have system falior, because then you receive every message that is on the server.
