I forgot to add something. Read below your words. You wrote:

If you do this, you wan't be able to see older messages if you need to use imap when you're away from home, simply because they will be deleted after you retrieve them with the pop3 protocol from your home pc. The way to save what you need is to have a backup of your messages and import it on your laptop or the computer you will use when you go.
