Carla, If this should happen again go to view, sort by, then check received and sort ascending, then the oldest messages will be on the bottom and you can just arrow up to the last message you got before the massive down load then press control + shift + the home key ( which will high light all the unwanted messages ) and then press the delete key and all the unwanted messages will be gone. This should only take you a minute to accomplish. Hope this helps.
