Hi, I use that command or you can go to tools and send and receive all. I don't know how you got all the emails and twice. It should only down load the last month and you can tell what you want when you set pop settings. Did you set your pop setting in gmail it self also? recent : should only get the last 30 days and when you do add it in your your configurations it does pick up every thing again. But that should happen only once. I deal with about 3 personal and 5 organizational gmail accounts. And I had that issue happen only once. I believe you your gmail setting you can choose also if you want to keep your messages on the server too or not. And what is happening when you send messages to your self? I just send from me to myself and that works just fine! Now if you are using gmail as your smtp server also, you would get doubles each time you send your self something because it will down load all your sent messages too! But I just change my SMTP to my internet provider and I don't get my sent messages that way.
Hope this helps and it is not totally off what you were asking!
