I noticed in a previous message that you have a new Dell laptop running
Vista. I bought a Dell laptop several months ago running Vista Home
Premium. After a few weeks, I started to have many keyboard problems and
problems with JAWS reading the screen correctly. Vista would just randomly
turn "Sticky" keys (where the modifier keys like the Shift, Alt or Control
key would stay on) or "Repeat" keys (where Vista starts ignoring keys if
used several times in a row). JAWS could not reliably read back numbers
when arrowing through by character in Excel, Word or Notepad. It could not
up and down arrow in these applications and the correct line either.

I don't know if you are starting to see these same problems. But if you see
any of these issues, you might check to see if my solution might apply to
your computer.

Freedom Scientific instructed me to do the following to resolve a conflict
with Media Direct software drivers that are provided by Dell. A Startup
driver created by CyberLink messes with the Video Intercept used by JAWS.

Hold down the Windows key and press R
Type msconfig and press Enter
Use Control Tab until you hear Startup
Tab to the list box
Arrow down the list and listen to a line for "PowerDVD" or "CyberLink"
If you hear an entry for this startup process, press Space to uncheck this
line.
Tab to the OK button and press Space
You will then be asked to restart the computer for the change to take
affect.

The process does not seem to be necessary. I can even play a DVD with Media
Direct. It still screws up JAWS and the keyboard while playing, but returns
to normal when the Media Direct window is closed.
