Jaws and Windows sounds are sent to the default audio output device. If
this is not functional, then plugging in a USB sound card or USB headset
will over ride the settings and become the default audio output device.
No software installation is necessary, Windows will have all the drivers
it needs. You can then configure your settings in order to restore sound
to your preferred audio output device.

It would seem my husband decided to install some updated drivers on
his computer last night, now no speech, no window sounds come up.
The computer does boot up and he has just enough sight to see that
it's on the desktop, but no windows sounds and of course no Jaws...
The driver was for Creative Sound Card. I just have no idea how to
fix this without any speech.
He uses xp pro and Jaws 9.
