It's a bit like having a thing maximized or minimized. I usually have messages by conversation checked, and automatically expand grouped conversations unchecked. This means you can skip (or read just one or two) messages in a group to find out what that thread is about. If then you're interested, you can expand that group or conversation with the right-arrow to read more messages.
