Mike, You would probably be better off looking into the Avast configuration options, once you've re-sorted the msconfig. Avast will probably again check whatever it is that it had checked,until you disable it there rather than in msconfig. (I don't use Avast; but that's generally how these programs work in this type of situation.)

An example of what could be happening: Norton had (or has) an 'office plug'in' in its misc. tab, which caused (or causes) problems of focus when office programs or documents are opened. The solution is to disable the office scanner plug-in. The antivirus general program should be adequate.
