MSAA stands for Microsoft Active Accessibility. It is a way for software to
describe the objects that are being used to create the program such as
lists, trees and such. When a developer uses what are known as standard
controls, the MSAA info is generally provided automatically. However when a
developer builds an application out of custom controls, then it is typically
necessary to support some form of method for programs like screen readers to
get at information. Supporting MSAA for example is how Flash and iTunes
make themselves accessible.

This is a new feature in JAWS 10. By and large you shouldn't need to go
changing this setting. But if you know that an application that isn't
speaking so well is supposed to have MSAA support, this is a setting you can
adjust.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] New "undocumented" feature in JAWS

   Hi all,
I ran across a feature that is possibly new to JAWS 10. Check this out:
1. Press insert number 6 to open Configuration Manager. If asked for a new
configuration name, press enter to accept the suggested filename, which has
the same name of the executable with a .jcf extension.
2. Press alt s to open the set options menu, then press a to open the
advanced settings dialog box.
3. Tab around until you come across "MSAA Mode". By default, this is set to
automatic, but you can set it to either enhanced or classic.
4. Press enter to accept the ok button.
5. Save the configuration with control s.
6. Exit Configuration Manager.
I've tried this feature with several applications, and it does make a
difference, particularly when in list or tree views.
Enjoy!
