You can scan a flash drive the same as you would any other hard drive, by
selecting it's drive letter in your virus software of choice. Just scanning
for viruses will not spread them, as far as I am aware. However, if the
flash drive is configured to run a program upon insertion, then it is
possible for such an action to spread a virus. If you have an up-to-date
virus program running on the host computer, then you should have a good
layer of protection from such a program doing major damage.
Unfortunately, those who create virus programs seem to be getting trickier
all the time. So, you have to be extra vigilant in keeping your virus
software up-to-date.
