I don't know if this is in the free edition of AVG, but in AVG Internet
Security one can set AVG to scan removable devices for malware, which will
happen upon connecting the device.

In theory your anti virus should protect your computer from any virus
on a flash drive. Other people on the list have covered all the ways of
scanning the drive but as long as your anti virus is up to date every thing
should go well.
