Thanks Flor! I did make the change and when reading letter by letter, I did get the ansi value. I'll play around with the dictionary. It was strange because it read fine in Jaws 9.

On the accented character, while still reading with Access32, press the numpad5 key three times on an accented character, to hear its ANSI value or its hexadecimal code or its Unicode value - all of which settings, and more, can be found in the Config manager by exploring the options there. You can also make JAWS dictionary entries for such characters, so that they will be pronounced by your favoured synthesizer wherever they occur. Different speech synthesizers also have their own inbuilt pronunciation dictionaries.
