Well, Brian, it looks like your instructions worked, though I really didn't
have to change anything in those settings. The only thing i did was to
press spacebar on the apply button and then okay and when I rebooted JAWS
started.

I'll pass your instructions along to Jo Luland since she's having the same
problem and she's a friend of mine.

Many thanks.

Hello Rianna,

It is different for XP but when I sent the message this morning I wasn't at
a system with XP on it to check. However, in the second screen of the
startup wizard you still need the checkbox checked for starting JAWS as a
service. If it is checked then check out the way the service is set up to
run. Open services by going to the run dialog and typing in services.msc.
This brings up a tree/list view of services running on your computer. use
tab key to move into the list view if necessary. When in the list view type
JFW quickly to move to the JFW service and listen to see if it says that it
is started and is set to run automatically. Press enter key on the service
name. In the general tab of the service properties use tab key to check the
controls. The combo box for start type should be set to automatic. Also
check the path for JFW.EXE to make sure it is correct. use CTRL+tab to move
to the log-on page of the dialog. There is a group of a couple radio
buttons for loca
l system account and this account. Either one should work if you only have
one account. Use tab key to a checkbox for allowing the service to interact
with the desktop and make sure it is checked. If not, press spacebar on the
checkbox. Use tab key again and see if the profile is enabled. If not then
there should be an enable button. use tab to see if there is an apply
button and if so depress it with the spacebar. Otherwise just tab to OK
button and press spacebar. Restart your system if you made changes and see
if it works for you.

Take care.
