brian,
The instruction you offered did fix the problem, however when doing the
F2 three to five times they didn't press the FN key first they just pressed
the F2 key the three to five times which took us into the same message
thanks for all your help the other steps were followed exactly as you had
instructed and I am now back up and running.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling preset quick keys on the keyboard
Hello Josh,
I don't have this particular keyboard but I understand that it is a
multimedia keyboard. apparently, Dell has an option in the CMOS to switch
it between a multimedia and a regular keyboard configuration. I will give
you those steps if you can have someone with sight help you follow them.
First, you might check in the regional and language settings in the
control panel as well as in the keyboard settings to find out if there is
any way to switch the keyboard in Windows. Also check for any software
that might have been installed with the option to change the mapping of
the keys. Otherwise, here are the steps that should apparently work:
1. Hold down the Fn key and the F2 key when you start your computer.
This has to be done before the Windows screen appears.
2. When setup appears Have the person helping you open system
configuration,
3. Find Function Key Behavior. The bottom of the screen will display
keystrokes that can be used. Change the function key behavior from
Multimedia first to Function Key First. Of course, the person needs to be
careful not to change anything else. If anything else is inadvertently
changed there is an exit choice without saving changes. The exit options
will be at the bottom of the screen.
4. After changing function key behavior from multimedia to function key
first there will be a save and exit choice to be used.
5. When you start Windows again the keyboard should work as you want it
to.
Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Disabling preset quick keys on the keyboard
hello to all
I have 2 problems going on here first of all i will tell you what I
am working with it is a dell inspiron 1545 running XP and jaws
professional version 10. Now on to the problems i received this laptop
from vocational rehabilitation the other day and when I started working
with and learning the keys with keyboard help on it was discovered that
the F 7 key acts as a mute key my question, is there a way to disable
this quick key so that the F7 key performs normally with jaws? Now
problem 2 I also have noticed that the only F key that reads properly is
the F6 key some examples of what the other F keys are reading are as
follows F1 = right bracket, F2= karat, and the F3 key reads the number 3
how can I fix this problem I appreciate any help I can get to resolve
these issues Thank you all in advance.
Josh
