Actually, you can uninstall it via Add/Remove. I did it on both my XP
machine and my Vista machine. The trick is a dialog that pops up for
a short time asking you to confirm if you're the one uninstalling the
program. On my XP box, Jaws read the dialog perfectly fine, however,
on my Vista machine, it didn't and I had to guess where the correct
button was. But, really, the worst that could happen is you hit no
and have to go back through the process again until you get it right.
You may need to alt tab to where you think the dialog is if you have
the same experience I did, but don't let that stop you from at least
trying to uninstall Avast. If this fails, then use sighted assistance
to go through putting Windows into safe mode. But that should be the
last resort. Trust me, I had a hard time uninstalling Avast because I
didn't know about that dialog, but I was able to figure it out once I
discovered that dialog, without any sighted assistance whatever. And,
by the way, I am totally blind and have absolutely no vision at all,
so it certainly is possible.

Randy, directions below from the Avast software tech department. I
haven't
tried this yet, awaiting sighted assistance for the Windows safe mode.
Warning to Avast users who want to uninstall this: you do need sighted
assistance since you can't uninstall AVast from add/remove programs
in the
control panel. marilyn
Hi,
1. You need to download our uninstall utility that you can download
here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html
2. Suspend avast! (right-click on the blue a-ball icon in the system
tray
(the bar at the bottom of the screen which contains the clock) >
Program
settings... > Troubleshooting > mark Disable avast! self-defense
module > OK
3. Turn computer in the Safe mode (Restart your computer. After
hearing your
computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears,
press F8. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select
the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.)
3. Run aswClear.exe
4. Restart
