Do I need scripts for this program? if I want to try it out?

I am using total recorder and I like to schedule it to perform
jobs. I would like to use the option to mute play back while it is
performing the job, but when I mute it, jaws is muted. Every time
I mute total recorder for any reason, jaws doesn't speak. Any way
out of this?
