Hello Darran,
If you don't want to hear the vertical bar announced, you can replace the
character with a space in either the application dictionary file or the
default dictionary file. Use JAWS key with D to bring up the dictionary
file for the application you are using. Use CTRL+Shift+D when in the
application dictionary file to load the default dictionary file. When
either in the application or default dictionary file use the add button to
make a new entry. In the actual word box type a backslash followed
immediately by 124. There should not be a space between the backslash and
the numbers. Use a tab key to the replacement word box and press spacebar.
Tab to OK and press spacebar and then save the change by using CTRL+S.
The bullets used on the web page you referenced in your message can also be
silenced by using the dictionary manager. When on that web page use JAWS
key with D to bring up the dictionary file for your browser. I am using
Internet Explorer 8. Hopefully, it is the same for your browser. Use tab
key to the tree structure and then press the end key. you should hear
"bullet equals bullet." The value for the bullet on the referenced web site
is 8226. The bullet at the end of this list in the Internet Explorer 8
dictionary file is also 8226. You can move to it in the tree structure and
then tab to the change button and depress it. Tab to the replacement word
field and replace the word bullet with a space. Tab to OK and then save
changes by using CTRL+S before closing the dictionary file.
The above takes care of one specific bullet type. however, there are many
different types. If you go into Microsoft Word and bring up the dictionary
file you will find several bullets in the tree structure. If you want to
change these from being announced in Word then you could change the
replacement word for those bullets. The numbers are shown for these bullets
in the Word dictionary tree structure, so you could open the default
dictionary and add entries for each if you want to. For example, adding an
entry that would have a backslash followed by the numbers 111 could be
changed and given a replacement of a space. This would prevent the
announcing of hollow round bullets with a courier new font.
I hope you get it working the way you want it to.
Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Having Real Silencing of Punctuation Problems
Hi List.
I wrote to you all a few weeks back about how to go about silencing the
announcing of "bullets" on all WebPages whilst using version 10.0.1154.
And I did get a very helpful response from Mike on this list.
However, even though I've set the announcing of every possible kind of
bullet to ALL, in Custom Punctuation, it just isn't working. I'm still
getting all bullets being announced! And I have made the changes in my
default configuration settings.
Here's an example of a page with the problem:
http://snipurl.com/skknd
I'm getting exactly the same kind of trouble when I try to silence the
"vertical bar" announcement as well!
Now, this is starting to drive me nuts, especially as I know I wasn't
having this kind of difficulty silencing these things in the past.
Can anyone out there throw any light on what I could possibly be doing
wrong?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
Darran
