It may well work for you but this will be because of your ISP allowing these settings to work. Many internet service providers will block emails sent through their servers unless it is under one of their account names. So for example if you have a BT Internet or Wannadoo contract in the UK you will not be able to send emails under smtp unless it is under an email address set up by them. Receiving emails is completely unproblematic.
Personally I regard this restriction as unwarranted and wish the regulators would force the ISPs to allow us freedom to use all email accounts to send as well as receive emails.
