If Avast still shows up in the System Tray, try closing it using Windows Task Manager (Alt-Control-Delete). Locate it on the Applications or Processes page, tab to the End Task button and hit Space. Once Avast has been closed, try to remove it using their removal tool or Revo Uninstaller.

I disabled the tray icon, but no matter what I did it still showed up in the
system tray when I rebooted.
