Not exactly true. Often, new versions of programs are released to fix security holes that would otherwise leave them vulnerable to malicious threats. So even though you might still be able to update Avast 4.8 with the latest virus definitions, the program itself may not be completely secure. Obviously, the most apparent change in Avast 5 is the redesigned inaccessible user interface, but there may be other bug fixes you may not be aware of.

If an older version of the software will support
the latest virus definitions, there should be no problem.
For the end user, the real problem occurs when the program interface becomes
unusable with Jaws.

Again, you are asking for trouble using an outdated version of an anti-virus program. Unless their tech support experts can assure you that making Avast
5 accessible is a top priority that will receive immediate attention, you
should seriously consider switching to another anti-virus program. Waiting months for a fix is simply not acceptable. On the other hand, you may well be able to continue using Avast 4.8 without encountering any problems. Just
keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Hello,

at this moment I recommend to downgrade back to avast! 4.8 and disable
program updates. We will try to resolve this problem.

You can set iAVS update to manual:

1) Start avast! program

2) Right-click anywhere on its window and from the menu select SETTINGS

3) In left pane, click on UPDATE (BASIC)

4) Set Program option to "Manual".

Best regards,
Jakub Vanous
