I haven't followed this thread from the start, so don't know whether this has been suggested, but another way of silencing jaws, is to press control with s with the long insert, also called the jaws key and then the letter n for no speech. To get speech back, press control s with jaws and e for elloquence, or if you're on version 10 and later, p for the primary default profile, or whatever letter, if you want to use a different profile you've previously set up.
