Well, first off, did your friend run the Win 7 upgrade advisor to be sure
your HP would support Win 7?
Second, can you do a run command and type narrator. Do you get any speech
then?
If not, then I'd check your sound drivers for compatibility.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] no jaws installation speech
I had a pc crash and decided rather than reinstall xp on my hp full
keyboard laptop, I installed windows seven. Now when I try to install Jaws
v11 from the dvd I have no jaws speech to perform this task. I have a
dvd/cd burner and I can hear the Windows seven sound at startup. Not sure
if this means anything related to this discussion but my techy friend who
installed Windows seven also installed Kerbersky antivirus.
